How do you make a watch more interesting to children, especially given the ever-escalating war for their attention that the media and toymakers are engaged in? Easy. Make it clever. The VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX does just that.

I Spy

The single biggest attraction of the Kidizoom watch is the fact that it has a 0.3-megapixel camera attached that can take both pictures and video. As you would expect for both the price and the customer, the quality isn’t very good (640×480 photo / 320×240 video), but kids don’t care. It’s cool. How many of us pretended to be a spy or undercover detective when we were younger, and wouldn’t we have loved to have a camera of our own to play with? Of course we would, and children today are pretty much the same.

Video clips are limited to sixty seconds in length, and as there’s only 128MB of memory they’ll need to be transferred to a PC using the supplied micro USB cable if junior wants to keep them. The photo files are very small and don’t fill up the capacity in the same way. The watch also lets you add special effects and frames to photos if you want, but this feels a bit like a throwaway add on rather than an important feature.

The Smartwatch DX also has a microphone for recording audio, three rather basic games, fifty different watch faces to choose from, a stopwatch, alarms and, of course, it functions as a watch. You can buy and download more games for the watch, but given that there are much more dynamic offerings out there on smartphones and tablets, never mind actual games consoles, you might decided not to.

Bold And Robust

Available in a variety of bright colours the VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX isn’t exactly svelte, but it’s robust enough to take few knocks. Make sure that it’s kept away from exposure to much water and that the micro-USB port cover is used.

Battery life is OK, but it’s of course dependent on how intensively it’s played with and how much the touch screen is used. Fortunately there’s an on/off switch that helps make it last when it’s not needed.

On the whole, this is a fun and easy to use smartwatch for kids with an exciting little camera. As with all toy manufacturers, you need to be a little wary of their recommended age range of 5-12, as over eight or nine year olds will certainly have grown out of it. For younger tots it will undoubtedly be a source of joy.
