Say Cheese! The VTech Kidizoom Duo may well have been around the block a few times, but it’s still one of the best selling kids camera out there, so it’s definitely got a lot to smile about. Available in blue or pink, and designed to be used by kids as young as 3, there’s no better kids camera on the market.

Mighty Megapixels

So what is it that’s keeping the VTech Kidizoom Duo up there? It is undoubtedly the 2.0mp camera, which might not sound like much but, compared to other kid-friendly cameras, this is like a Nikon D750. Even the VTech action camera, designed to mimic the big brands like GoPro, can only boast a 0.3mp camera, so that’s putting things in perspective. We’re in Amazon Fire territory here. Simple as that.

Snap Happy

But still, in the grand scheme of things, 2.0mp isn’t really breaking any records and, you know, that’s OK. The Kidizoom Duo isn’t intended to satisfy budding David Baileys, or the next Annie Leibovitz. It’s intended to be a toy, and that’s exactly what you get with this. Photography is just one of many features of the Kidizoom Duo, which is arguably more of a camera-shaped toy than a toy-shaped camera.

As well as photography, there’s also 5 games included on the Kidizoom Duo, and a whole load of photo effects to add. But that’s not all. There’s also an integrated voice recorder, and voice effects, too, which can slow down or speed up speech, or have you sounding like a Joe Pasquale impersonator. Parents, what can I say except – Good luck! I bet those kids of yours know a song that will get on your nerves, get on your nerves, get on your nerves (and as an added bonus, sound quality isn’t exactly wonderful!).

Getting to Grips

The camera possibly isn’t the easiest to use. Controls are very limited, which means that they’re often dual purpose and, therefore, doubly confusing! Navigating through the menus sometimes feels like trying to find Toby in the Labyrinth, but it can be done! On the plus side, although the software is a bit of a challenge, the hardware is excellent, with big, chunky, rubbery grips at either side so that kids can hold the camera up to their face like binoculars. It seems to be the perfect size and shape for little hands.

Final Thoughts

The VTech Kidizoom Duo is an introduction to cameras, rather than being an introduction to photography. Older kids who actually want to see decent results would be much better off with a ‘real’ camera, although younger kids who want to take a few photos and play a few games will definitely get a kick out of this. And to be completely fair, the 2.0mp camera isn’t bad at all. In fact, in terms of kids cameras (and even a few tablets and smartphones), 2.0mp is incredible. There’s a reason the Kidizoom Duo is holding its top spot after all this time. If you won’t listen to me, just look at the sales figures!
