It all started with a big… BOOM! In the last few years, Ultimate Ears, or UE (a part of the Logitech company) have tried their hand at all sorts. We’ve had the teeny tiny MINI BOOM, which looked more like a genetically-modified grape than a speaker, and we had the slightly larger MEGA BOOM, with a little more junk in the trunk, but UE can’t help but keep running back home to their baby; the original BOOM.

But now the BOOM is better than ever before, with the brand spanking new UE BOOM 2; an updated version that’s been designed to take all the good stuff from the BOOM and make it more fun and funky.

Feel the Beat

Like the original BOOM, the UE BOOM 2 features 360 degree sound, but the difference here is that you can turn it up louder than ever before, with a max 90 dBA noise level compared to the previous 88… now that’s enough to get the whole street talking, never mind just the neighbours. As with the original BOOM, sound quality does leave something to be desired at the higher volumes unfortunately, but this is the same with practically every single compact speaker on the market today. Even the big name speakers at the top of their game like the Jawbone Jambox have this exact same issue. It’s not an epic problem.

Luckily, the app does come in pretty handy for doing a little tinkering and finding that perfect sound for the occasion. Sound settings, including bass and treble, can all be manually adjusted through the app, which is the same app that’s used for all UE speakers. Works on both Android and iOS devices.

Looking Good

The new UE BOOM 2 is pretty much exactly the same size and weight as its predecessor, although it is notably smaller and lighter than its big sister, the MEGA BOOM. Comparing the BOOM and the BOOM 2, there’s really not that much difference in overall design; if any two speakers were likely to be switched at birth, it would be these two. However, there are a few differences which give the BOOM 2 the edge…

New for the BOOM 2 is waterproofing, with an IPX7 rating which means you’ve pretty much got 30 minutes to rescue a drowning speaker from a 1 metre depth. Or, you know, you could just use it in the bath or shower, or when you’ve got an over-filled martini in hand. Also new is the built-in accelerometer; yep, the exact same technology that you’ll find in wearable devices like Fitbits and Garmin trackers. Why? So that the BOOM 2 can sense movement. Give it a good old smack on the bottom and you can instantly pause or unpause a song. Give it two almighty whacks and you can skip ahead on your playlist. It’s great for sound control, and also for getting a bit of built-up frustration out! Poor BOOM 2, hey?

Don’t fancy entering into a fist fight with your speaker? No probs. The UE BOOM 2 comes with Siri and Google Now already installed, so you can always just ask politely. Why use fists when you can use words?

Wishful Thinking

UE claims that the UE BOOM 2 can play continuously for up to 15 hours… ‘up to’ being the operative phrase. Sadly, if you were a little disappointed with the battery life of the original BOOM, you’re not going to be much happier now. 15 hours is, without a doubt, wishful thinking. You can’t blame UE. After all, who amongst us hasn’t subtracted a couple of lbs when asked for our weight at a GP check up? It’s natural to want to be better. Realistically, you’re looking at around 8 hours, a bit more if you’re lucky.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow…

… there’s the UE BOOM 2, in practically every colour you can dream up. Fortunately for those who want something a little more simple and sophisticated, there are some plainer, more understated options bundled in amongst the ‘Yeti White’ and ‘Cherrybomb Red’ (all we need is some Phthalo Green, Prussian Blue, and Van Dyke Brown and we’d have a Bob Ross colour palette). The overall design, however, is still UE through and through; they don’t make the best looking products, but I’ve certainly seen much worse!

Final Thoughts

In terms of sound quality and compactivity, the original BOOM was great, but it lacked the additional features to make it a good contender in the mini speaker stakes. Well, with the UE BOOM 2, this little guy now has what it takes to hit the top of the leaderboards. Look out Bose, UE is right on your tail!
