B…b…body……r…r…rap! Come on now, don’t pretend you can’t remember the Body Rap ‘rhythm and sound machine’, possibly the most 80’s invention in the world ever. You were no one unless you had this nifty little kit to transform your wrists, your ankles, and your head into a moving drum kit, but like most 80s trends, it died a death. Until now! Soundmoovz has made it possible to relive our glory days – our days of Mannequin, Duran Duran, Tetris, and shoulder pads – with these new, wearable beat bands.

Fair warning, though: you may not look as cool with the Soundmoovz bands as you did with that giant turquoise speaker attached to your skinny jeans, but that’s something you’re going to have to live with.

So… What is It?

Have you ever seen the episode of Family Guy where Peter asks the genie for his own theme music? Well, with Soundmoovz you can have your very own jolly jingle as you walk down the street… just what you always wanted! Robot noises as you show off your robot dance skills? Amazing! With Soundmoovz, you get 2 wearable bands, and access to a massive library of more than 400 different sound effects.

Too Cool for School?

So, the Soundmoovz bands aren’t exactly pretty. In fact, they look (and feel) like a mosquito band, although the good news is that they don’t have that same overpowering citronella stench to them. Phew! They’re no fashion statement… but at the same time, they’re no fashion statement! No one needs to know you’re wearing them, so if you want to keep your little 80s revival to yourself, you can. The bands are available in blue, black, or purple, and are actually remarkably comfortable to wear.

How Does it Work?

Gone are the mess of wires from the Body Rap days, instead replaced with bluetooth technology. The Soundmoovz USP is that there’s no lag between making a movement and generating a sound, and they’ve got it pretty much spot on. When connected via bluetooth to a device, sound responses are instantaneous. Add a third layer into the mix – speakers – and the lag does become slightly noticeable.

Does it Work Well?

Surprisingly, yes! There are 40 preset sounds to choose from (unfortunately you can only choose 1 sound at a time per band), and a whole more to choose from using the app, which works on both Android and iOS devices. The app is OK, a little slow to load in places, but it won’t have been the worst you’ve ever seen. The sensitivity adjuster is a lifesaver, and the quality of the sound does, of course, depend on your speakers or mobile device, but as long as you’re dealing with something a little better than the Sony Z3 (wowza, the sound quality on that was terrible!), then you’re probably going to do just fine.

Final Thoughts

A bit silly, a bit pointless, but ultimately a bit of harmless fun. Soundmoovz bands may seem a little out of place in the 21st century, but they work well, and do what they say. What more could you ask for?
