Keeping Track of the Jawbone UP24

It might look like a stick of liquorice but the Jawbone UP24 claims to be the latest activity and sleep tracking device which can help you keep track of your fitness levels and your sleep, so just how does it measure up against the rest – including the popular Fitbit bands?

Those All Important Looks

The design certainly looks and feels clunkier than some of the other fitness bands out there – instead of looking like a festival rubber band it looks more like a piece of jewellery so I’m not entirely sure how this would appeal to male users. The manufacturers say that medical grade rubber has been used to prevent skin irritation and instead of gripping the wrist tightly, the two ends snake together, holding it in place. It comes in three different sizes and in six different colours.

Once you wear it for a few days it does become more comfortable but it has a tendency to catch on things (on the keyboard whilst typing for instance and on clothes) which makes me slightly wary of breaking it.

Available in three different sizes (small, medium and large), UP24 was designed by Yves Béhar – a Swiss designer and founder of Fuseproject.

Keeping Your Entire Life on Track

Just like the majority of other activity trackers, this is a band that you are supposed to wear all the time so that it can record your levels of fitness and track your sleep. You use the button at the end of the UP24 to tell it when it is day or night, if you want to use the stopwatch or if you fancy a power nap. The only drawback is that Jawbone state that whilst it’s shower-proof it’s not waterproof. So no deep-sea diving!

Another downer is the lack of a screen. What the UP24 does do is sync automatically to the app on your phone so if you want to know how well you are doing then you’ll need to have your phone on you at all times.

The main advantage that it does have is Bluetooth. This allows you to monitor your progress in real time without having to connect the UP24 to your PC.

Connect UP24 with your smartphone for instant feedback, reminders, health tips and recommendations based on your location and tracked activity.

The Jawbone UP24 collects all of your activity and sleep data and to further help it to build a picture of your overall health and fitness you can also input your own data, such as the meals that you have eaten and any workouts you’ve done where you didn’t have the UP24 – such as cycling, swimming, deep-sea diving… However this does rely on the user not only remembering to input this on their phone but also being honest about it – we all know that we generally lie to ourselves about how much of that pizza we actually ate and how many lengths of the swimming pool we did, so don’t be surprised if you find that the data is slightly skewed in your favour.

That data is then used by the rather clever Jawbone Insight tool which analyses all the info collected and sends out tips and helpful advice on how you can improve your score. A weekly email is also sent to you with a summary of the past weeks achievements and small but achievable recommendations on how you can improve on those scores. Other additions to the app are also designed to make you proactive when it comes to your own health – such as the ‘Today I Will’ feature which makes you promise to drink more water or go to bed earlier. And just like the Fitbit Flex, you can set alarms to remind you of your promises.

The battery life is also pretty impressive – 14 days with the latest firmware (previously 7 days) compared to the 4 days promised by the Fitbit Flex, the main drain on your battery being the Bluetooth syncing.

UP24 has doubled it’s previous battery life expectancy from 7 days to 14 (that’s a mighty 2 weeks) thanks to the brainiacs at FullPower and the latest firmware update.

Performance Issues

If you Google the Jawbone UP24 and iPhone app you’ll note quite a few disgruntled customers. It seems that the UP24 works best with Android and iOS devices, so older iPhone users may well experience a few issues such as unreliable data and features going missing.

Overall the Jawbone UP24 does have a fair range of features to choose from and the notifications and sleep data proved most useful. The data is presented in a way which is easy to read and understand and you can of course share your data with your friends and team-mates.

I found the design to be a little annoying and because it does have a tendency to catch on things, I couldn’t forget it was there. That does also make me wonder about the overall quality of the product and how long before it breaks.

Personally I’d plump for the Fitbit Flex but if you want a more proactive fitness tracker with the benefits of Bluetooth then give the UP24 a try.
