Trying to decide between Macbooks today is like asking a kid to choose between a chocolate cupcake with sprinkles and a tub of pick ‘n’ mix. Basically, it’s enough to cause your head to start spinning before finally exploding into a million pieces. We’ve got the Macbook, the Macbook Air, the Macbook Pro, we’ve got 12-inch screens, 13-inch screens, 15-inch screens… we’re awash in a sea of portable computers. But what we do know is that the Macbook is still one of the best models for everyday computing tasks.

In fact, it’s so good that Apple are continuously making little tweaks to really enhance the overall experience for users, and that’s exactly how we’ve ended up with the new 2017 12-inch Macbook.

2015 V 2017: What’s New?

Well, you know how I said ‘little tweaks’ above? I meant it. Like, really meant it. This is pretty much, for all intents and purposes, the exact same model as the 2015 Macbook. Resolution? The same at 2304 x 1440. Battery? The same at 10 hours, give or take. It looks the same, it feels the same, it does all the same stuff, but it does come with one teeny tiny change (one that you’d be forgiven for overlooking).

Rub your fingers over the keys and they’ll probably feel a little different. That’s because the tiny tweak with the 2017 Macbook is the deeper keys, replacing the notoriously shallow ones of the past. The change itself may be miniscule, but for people like me who sit around in their pajamas all day and write reviews, the difference is massive. The typing experience is more similar to what you get from a PC, which is a godsend when you’re a big typer. I’ll admit it does take a bit of getting used to though!

A Matter of Compromise

Owning a Macbook has always meant compromise, right from the outset. Remember when the first Apple Macbook was introduced and we had a portable computers that were too slow to actually use? That’s what I’m talking about. Now don’t panic; we’re not quite at that level of compromise here. In fact, speed and general response is all completely decent. But there is still an element of swapping power for portability, with a max. 1.4 Ghz i7 processor which will never live up to the 2.2 Air, or the 2.5 Pro. But compromising on power is a good deal as we get a 13mm envelope-thick laptop weighing just 0.9kg.

Port Probs

Are you sitting down? OK. I have good news, and I had bad news. Let’s start with the good. In a true effort to make a teeny weeny computer, Apple moved away from the old, chunky USB-3 port with the 2015 Macbook, and they’ve never looked back. Good for them. The bad news… there is still just ONE USB-C on the Macbook 2017. This single port thing has been a major gripe throughout the entire Macbook evolution, and it’s a common problem that’s failed to be addressed in all this time. Poor.

Design

If you like pretty things, then you’re going to love the Macbook. The 2017 version is available in rose gold, gold, space grey, and silver; that’s more colour options that the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro combined. This just goes to show that the Apple Macbook is designed to be a truly portable device that’s meant to be shown off. If your personality is a rather unhealthy mix of competitiveness and pettiness, as mine is, the Macbook is perfect; you’ll have the most attractive computer in the coffeeshop. You win!

Final Thoughts

Until something new, groundbreaking, and totally revolutionary comes along, the Macbook is always going to be the automatic go-to option for portable computing. Simple as that. But when Apple are making such small tweaks to their products, it’s natural that people are going to be asking questions.

So is the new 2017 version of the Apple Macbook really worth it? Well, it depends. As a first venture into portable computing, the Macbook is the obvious answer. As an upgrade to an existing Macbook…. That’s more difficult to answer. Honestly, most people probably won’t want the hassle of buying a new Macbook, setting it up, and so on and so on just for a subtle keyboard change. On the other hand, the difference this small change makes for frequent typers is massive. Ah, you only live once. Go for it.
