It’s sleek, it’s slim, it’s light – what could it be? Only the Apple iPad Mini 3! Ok curb your enthusiasm whilst we dish the dirt on Apple’s popular – and smallest – iPad.

What’s the Big Deal?

Let’s get this straight – it’s not a tablet, nor is it a Smartphone. You can’t make calls on it and neither can you pen the latest report for work, but what you can do is surf the web, catch up on emails, take pictures/videos and take advantage of all the latest apps and games. Sure you can do all that on an iPod but with a 7.9 inch LED multi-touch display and an impressive 1024 x 768 resolution, you’ll find the iPad Mini 3 gives a much better user experience.

Don’t Judge an iPad by its Looks

But if you must then you’ll be impressed by this little beauty. It’s lighter than the Nexus 7 and definitely slimmer making the iPad Mini 3 much more portable than its counterparts. The only drawback to this sleek, shiny beauty is the fact that it’s also incredibly slippery. When you are operating it with just one hand that raises possible issues and you are never too sure if it’s going to just slip out of your hand. Mind you, you could just get a case for it which most people do anyway?

The screen is smaller than the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire and lacks Retina display – it’s also quite reflective which is a noticeable disadvantage. If you are used to looking at small screens then possibly you won’t notice the difference but when you are streaming movies, the black lines above and below the screen – thanks to the 4:3 screen aspect ratio – do nothing to enhance the movie.

Let’s Talk Action

Ok so there are a couple of issues with the screen design, although if you are upgrading from a phone or iPod then you won’t notice them as much. So what about performance? Well it has a 1.3GHz dual-core Apple A7 processor (with 64-bit architecture) and M7 motion coprocessor – mean anything to you? Thought not. Let’s put it this way, it’s as fast as your iPhone 5S and faster than your iPhone 4S, iPhone 5C and iPod Touch so that’s a good thing!

It states that the battery life is 10 hours and that’s pretty much accurate, although you obviously get less power if you’re streaming movies.

Now the most impressive feature by far is the sound quality on the iPad Mini 3. The speakers are on the front of the iPad which is much better as you can play music with the iPad facing up. Sound quality is great both with and without headphones – but remember folks, not everyone shares your music taste so do us all a favour and get some Bluetooth headphones ok?

The camera is fine but recording videos does suck up a lot of memory as there’s no option to save lower quality videos.

Anything Else?

Don’t you just hate it when your thumb presses something for you as you’re holding it? Not with the iPad Mini 3 as it has special technology which can detect a thumb print and ignore it – so good news for those with big thumbs.

Synchronising your iPad Mini to your PC is as easy as ABC. Just open the iCloud on your PC and all your IE favourites, booksmarks, etc can be transferred to the iPad, plus whenever you update these, they will automatically update on both devices.

Recommended?

For a portable device the iPad Mini 3 delivers. Sure it could have a bigger screen but would it then be as portable? It’s incredibly easy to use, which is why it’s popular with kids and has a vast array of apps to keep everyone happy.

If you are looking for something with more power and a higher quality resolution, then you’d plump for the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire, but then you lose the slimline, lightweight advantages which makes the iPad Mini 3 so great when you are out and about.

So yeah, why not recommend it? As with everything it depends on what you want it for, but I don’t think many people would be disappointed with the iPad Mini 3 and if they are – then they should have read this review first!

UPDATE: The iPad Mini 3 has now been discontinued, but still available via third party sellers while stocks last. If you want the latest iPad Mini, check out our iPad Mini 4 Review for specs, prices and details.
